In this class we were discussing about Design Ethics, like why does it matter? and how do we do it right?
There are some written and unwritten rules on how designers do business and interact with clients, colleagues and customers. Especially when everyone is different on treating other people. It is important to build trust in the business. When trust is made with the clients, word will go around and more people will e interested to work with you. Though we should keep in mind to respect other artist. Plagiarism is definitely sensitive in this business. Position yourself in other’s shoes. How would you feel if someone used your work to gain profit?
It is recommended not to put other artist on your mood-board. Develop them on your own inspiration and project brief, if possible using your own pictures. This shows your abillity and skills to your clients. When starting your project, research is very important. You should find information from both online and offline resources. You can use journals or even ask and talk with other people regarding their preference and opinions. Conducting your own research is a useful skill.
During the development of your project, you should start with scribbles and sketches on your idea for the client. Write the ideas down and create a mind map. This will help you planning since it would be more organized as well. Coming up with options is never wrong. You can show them the product that they want and the one that you think is nice. This shows your skill and the client can choose on which they prefer.
Validating your idea for the target audience is one important key. We cannot make produce something based on our own preference. We should satisfy all client, customers and consumers.
There are a few ethics you should know when accepting clients. In which you are in a position where you are offered to create a promotional item for something you don’t like. For example, cigarettes. Would you turn it down? What’s more important for you? Money or Moral? In my opinion, if my financial situation is not in a critical state, I would decline it. I do not think it is good to create a promotional item for something that could affect the younger generations. Though if I was in desperate need of financial assistance, I would take that offer. But in return, I would ask if they can charge more due to their product and donate the money to those in need.
Avoid critical financial issues so start saving money!!
After the discussion of design ethics, we presented our task from the previous week. There were some corrections made. There are a few information that is not really needed, therefore I deleted it. Instead, more information regarding how seminars are originated and its history was added, as shown below.
